On episode #29 of Founder Real Talk, I had the pleasure of chatting with Assaf Wand, Co-Founder and CEO of Hippo, an insuretech company that is approaching the home insurance market using IoT devices, satellite imagery and big data analytics with the goal of providing more accurate and cheaper policies to homeowners. It was interesting to learn how Assaf was born into the insurance industry as his Dad was in the space, but ultimately knew he wanted to do something to fix the industry after witnessing how broken the legacy systems were while at McKinsey. The good news for Hippo is that it’s a big market. The bad news is that it’s a big market, so there are lots of incumbents. Assaf isn’t worried since even if he captures a small percentage of the market, it’s still a $100 billion market growing at $5 billion a year. That’s massive! Insuretech may not sound sexy, but it’s certainly needed as 64% of the U.S. population is underinsured and the home is most people’s biggest financial purchase. I would recommend this episode to any founder or potential founder seeking motivation to fix a big problem. Enjoy!
